HOP Press Release Linking Alcohol Sales Tax Increase with Drop in Sexually Transmitted Infections Reaches more than 22 Million

 

A recent HOP press release reporting an association between an increase in Maryland’s state sales tax on alcohol with a 24 percent drop in certain sexually transmitted infections was picked up by a number of media outlets, including The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Science Daily, Glamour, Vox.com, and Center Maryland. Stephanie A.S. Staras, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy, published “Maryland Alcohol Sales Tax and Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Natural Experiment” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine together with Melvin D. Livingston, Ph.D., and Alexander C. Wagenaar, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy. The combined media coverage generated by the press release reached a potential audience of more than 22 million.
